Speech & Language Delay

Speech and language needs refer to challenges children may face in speaking, understanding, or using language. These needs can involve difficulty pronouncing words clearly (speech issues), or trouble understanding what others say or expressing thoughts effectively (language issues). For example, a child might find it hard to form sentences, follow instructions, or use the right words in conversation. These challenges can vary from mild to more noticeable, and can affect a child's ability to communicate with others at school, at home, or in social settings.

If parents notice any struggles in these areas, such as unclear speech or difficulty with conversations, it may be helpful to seek advice from our SENDCo, Lisa Jackaman, who can assess the child's needs and recommend support strategies using a tool called Speech Link. This will identify common speech errors, and give staff the resources to work with your child to improve speech. Clear indication of when to involve a speech and language therapist is also given. School can help with referring to a Speech and Language Therapist (SALT).

If your child is currently on a speech and language programme, please continue to support this at home. If you need any support, please contact Bethan Arden Jones (our school's S&L therapist) via email on bethan.ardenjones@nhs.net
